3. When I put my Project CD into my CD-ROM nothing happens. What do I do?
  • Some computers don't automatically open CD-ROMs. In that case, go to your Windows Start menu and select Run | Open | D:\Setup.exe where D: is your CD drive.
  • If nothing happens when you run Setup.exe, your InterClipper software and the Project from that CD have already been installed on your computer. Go to the Windows start menu and select Programs | InterClipper to open the program. Then select File | Open from the InterClipper menu to select the Project to open.
  • To view your Project in the Microsoft Media Player, you can locate the file on the Project CD with the .asx extension and run that file.

5. I know I created more clips than I can see in the ClipGrid. How can I see all my clips?
  • InterClipper has several ways to sort your clips that can limit the number of clips that are visible at any given time.
  • The Section Filter will limit the ClipGrid to displaying only the clips in the selected Session or Section. Turn it off by clicking on the funnel shaped icon below the InterClipper video screen to display all the clips in the Project.
  • Other tools that affect the ClipGrid display are the QuickSort and the Main Filter. For more on these see the Getting Started Guide.

7. How do I get my video clips into PowerPoint?
  • The best way to put clips into PowerPoint is to select on the PowerPoint menu Insert | Movies and Sounds | Movie From File. Then you can browse to find your InterClipper clips.
  • InterClipper saves video clips to a special folder called Exports. Every Project has an Exports folder. Project Directories are normally located on your hard drive in a Folder called InterClipper Projects. To find a video clip in a Project called Project 1 you would look here: C:\InterClipper Projects\Project 1\Exports\Clip 7
  • Normally, when inserted, clips will be displayed on the PowerPoint page as a still video frame from the beginning of the clip. To play the clip, you can click on it with your mouse or play it using PowerPoint animation controls.

8. Sometimes, when I insert a clip into PowerPoint I get a black frame or a message that the file can't be inserted. What can I do?
  • In some cases, you may fix these problems by re-exporting the clip from InterClipper with a slightly different start or end point.
  • To display an icon instead of a black frame you can insert the clips as an Object. On the PowerPoint menu, select Insert | Object | Create From File. Then browse to locate the video clip file.
  • If this occurs frequently, have your computer checked to make sure the proper multimedia system files are installed and properly configured in your operating system.

9. How can I make sure that the clips I insert in PowerPoint will be available when I send the presentation to someone else?
  • Normally when you insert a video clip into PowerPoint you are actually creating a link from the PowerPoint presentation to a separate video file. To assure that the file is available to be played when you move the presentation you must
    • send copies of the video files with the presentation file and
    • make sure that the links between the presentation and the videos remain valid.
  • The easiest way to keep your linked video files together with your presentation is to simply place both the presentation file (extension .ppt) and your video clips (extension .asf) in the same folder. Then copy the whole folder and send it off.
  • Another option is to use the Pack and Go feature of PowerPoint. This will permit you to place a copy of the video files and the presentation into a "package" that can be opened like a PowerPoint presentation. In PowerPoint select File | Pack and Go and select "Include Linked Files."

10. I sent a clip to someone but they can't view it? What can they do?
  • InterClipper clips are in the Microsoft Advanced Streaming Format or ASF file format. To play these clips, users must have the Microsoft Media Player 6.4 or later. The vast majority of Windows computers have the right Media Player.
  • Also, every InterClipper Project disc contains a copy of this free program. To download versions of the Media Player for Windows and Macintosh operating systems, go to the Windows Media Player Download Center

11. I gave my Project CD to a colleague to review but when they installed it my notes weren't there. How can I give my notes on the Project to someone else? (Advanced topic)
  • Once the Project CD is created at the facility, you can't record any new information onto it. InterClipper makes a copy of the information you need to change and puts that on your hard drive. These Project Directories - one for each Project - are normally placed in C:/InterClipper Projects. (The main video files stay on the CD to save space on your hard drive.)
  • The notes you make about clips, and the information about editing the clips is recorded onto your hard drive in the Project Directory as you make changes to the Project. InterClipper also makes new files of the video clips that you export and places them on the hard drive in the Exports folder of the Project Directory.
  • If you want to give a full copy of an updated InterClipper Project to someone else, you must give them copies of
    • the updated Project Directory from your hard drive and
    • the video files from the CD.
You can use any media that can accommodate the files such as CD-R, ZIP discs or network drives. Note that if you distribute a copy of the Project Directory via CD-R, you will have to move these files onto writable media like a hard drive before the Project can be opened and altered. When these files are recorded onto the CD-R they will be given the "Read Only" property. After you copy them back to writable media, you must remove the Read Only property as follows:
    • In Windows Exploring, select all the files in the Project Folder on the hard drive
    • On the Windows Exploring File menu select Properties.
    • Uncheck the Read-only box on the Attributes line.

12. How do I work with a Project that is on multiple CDs?

Normally, your InterClipper Projects will fit on one CD containing up to 12 hours of video. There are cases when it can be helpful to have more than 12 hours in a single Project or higher quality video files that take more space per hour. In that case the video that cannot fit on the first CD is placed on additional CDs to make up a multi CD InterClipper Project.

When your project takes up more than one CD, the procedure for playing video is different from a single CD set. You start by installing the project: insert Disk 1 of the set in your CD-ROM drive and follow the prompts to install InterClipper and the Project. This will put the Project data files on your hard drive where you can add comments and make edits to the data about the video.

All your original video normally stays on your CDs to save space on your hard drive. So when you have a multi-CD set, you may get the message that the Video file cannot be found on the CD that’s in your CD-ROM device. If that happens, just put in each of the other CD’s of the set and click to play that session or clip again until it plays and does not give the message.

Note: When you export video clips, these smaller files are copied from the video on the CD onto your hard drive where you can put them in PowerPoint or attach them to email.

To be able to use the whole project without switching among your disks, you can copy the video from the whole project onto your hard drive as follows.
  • The video must be copied to a drive, whether local or network, which you access by drive letter, such as C: X: or similar, and not as \\server\C\etc or similar designation.
  • You need to create a folder on the root of that drive called Interclipper Projects, and then copy the contents of the Media folder from the discs other than Disk 1 to the Media directory of the InterClipper Projects directory or your hard drive as shown below. You can also copy the contents of the Media folder on Disk 1 to the same directory or keep Disk 1 in the CD Rom drive while viewing.
  • The Media folder contents are a series of folders with the names of the Sessions. For example, if you put the files on the InterClipper Projects folder on your C drive where the Project database files are, they look like this:
C:\InterClipper Projects\
    (“Your Project Name”)\
        Media\
            (“Your Session Name 1”)
                (video file 1)
                (video file 2)
            (“Your Session Name 2)
                (video file 3)
                (video file 4)
            (“Your Session Name 3)
                (video file 5)
                (video file 6)
            (“Your Session Name 4)
                (video file 7)
                (video file 8)

In this case you would need to create the Media folder or copy it from one of the CDs along with the Session and video files.

Also note that Multi CD sets do not currently play back video on the media player with playlist information beyond the first CD’s video. You can manually play the video files on these CDs in the Media Player but the playlist labeling information will not be displayed in the media player.
Back to Top 13. When should I mark a video clip?

Whether you mark in realtime, during the session, or later when you play the video in InterClipper, you
  • mark once per clip
  • at then end of a good comment.
Then when you play the clip in InterClipper it will start playing 10 seconds before you marked it so you’ll hear at least 10 seconds of good stuff. If it’s really good stuff you can change the start and the stop of the clip to get exactly the right length clip to export to email and PowerPoint. Everything is recorded so you won’t miss anything. Feel free to mark as many clips as you want. It’s easy to skip through the clips.

14. Which button on the marker should I push?

Clips can be sorted in InterClipper by who marked the clip or by the rating of the clip (or other information as well.) Each marker is labeled with
  • A letter that identifies which marker the clip was used to create the clip. Each clip is labeled by this marker letter: A, B, C or D.
  • An "L" next to the left hand button and an "H" next to the right hand button.
The clip rating is determined by which button you push. All clips have a 5 point rating scale so you can rate and sort the clips according to the scale.
  • The left or “L” button gives the clip a “0” rating.
  • The right or “H” button gives it a “3” rating.
Then as soon as you open up the Project you can review the clips rated “3” right away. You can change these ratings later at any time. You can also add ratings to unrated clips.
